GS-0404-05 Fire Effects Monitor Major Duties:
A Fire Effects Monitor establishes monitoring plots in a variety of vegetation types in accordance with established guidelines and directions. Identifies immature grasses, herbs, shrubs and trees to species. Enters field data into computer database. Catalogs, labels and stores plant materials collected during the season. Monitors plots and makes field observations of resource conditions. May monitor flame length and rate-of-spread by being in close proximity to wildland fires in order to prepare fire behavior monitoring documentation forms. Encouraged to volunteer to take arduous duty pack-test in order to potentially serve as a red-carded wildland firefighter. GS-0404-06 Fire Effects Monitor Major Duties:
Leads others in fire effects data collecting and coordinating field work. Independently establishes monitoring plots in a variety of vegetation/fuel types in accordance with established guidelines and directions. Identifies immature grasses, herbs, shrubs and trees to species. May temporarily lead others in the aforementioned tasks. Enters field data into computer database. Catalogs, labels and stores plant materials collected during the season. Monitors plots and makes field observations of resource conditions. May monitor flame length and rate-of-spread by being in close proximity to wildland fires in order to prepare fire behavior monitoring documentation forms. Encouraged to volunteer to take arduous duty pack-test in order to potentially serve as a red-carded wildland firefighter. All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-01/10/2020-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement. Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40
hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount o qualified specialized experience. To qualify for this position at the GS-05 grade level, you must possess one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:
Experience:
At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-04 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as:
working as a member of a team or assisting with reading vegetation monitoring plots by identifying immature grasses, herbs, shrubs, and trees to species; assisting with field observations of glades, woodlands, and fens; assisting with collecting and reporting live and dead fuel loadings; assisting with collecting and reporting fire behavior and weather data relating to spread rate, flame length, and other fire prescription elements, etc. You must include hours per week worked. -OR- EDUCATION:
Successful completion of at least four years of education above high school (120 semester hour or 180 quarter hours) leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or 24 semester hours of course work in a scientific or technical field of study, such as biology, chemistry, statistics, entomology, animal husbandry, botany, physics, agriculture, or mathematics. (At least 6 semester hours of this coursework was in plants, botany, or fire ecology related subjects.). You must include transcripts. -OR- Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above. NOTE:
Only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours of a course of study leading to a bachelor's degree is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirements. The total must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. You must include transcripts. To qualify for this position at the GS-06 grade level, you must possess one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:
Experience:
At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-5 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). Specialized experience is experience that has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position and is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Examples include independent fire effects field work in:
reading vegetation monitoring plots by identifying immature grasses, herbs, shrubs, and trees to species; making and documenting field observations of glades, woodlands, and fens; collecting and reporting live and dead fuel loadings; or collecting and reporting fire behavior and weather data relating to spread rate, flame length, and other fire prescription elements. This work is typically performed in prescribed fire or wildland fire settings. OR EDUCATION:
Successful completion of at least one year (18 semester hours) of graduate level education, or a graduate level internship, which is directly related to the work of the position, such as fire ecology or botany. Internships must be documented on transcripts to be creditable and a copy of your transcripts is required if you are qualifying based on your education or internship. OR An equivalent combination of education and

Experience:
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. You must include months, years and hours per week worked to receive credit for your work and/or volunteer experience. One year of specialized experience is equivalent to 12 months at 40 hours per week. Part-time hours are prorated. You will not receive any credit for experience that does not indicate exact hours per week or is listed as varies.
